Warning over council tax scam

TRADING Standards chiefs at Warrington have warned residents and business to be on their guard if they receive a telephone call from anyone offering to help save them money on their council tax payments.
A number of complaints have been received reporting calls from a company offering to save money on council tax and suggesting that they may be banded incorrectly.
Residents and local businesses are being urged not to engage with a caller of this kind and not to give them any personal details.
The warning follows on from a previous alert before Christmas after a number of residents reported the same problem.
Cllr David Keane (right), the council’s executive member for environment and public protection, said: “Please report any incident of this nature to Cheshire Police by dialling 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where you can pass the information on anonymously or via their website www.crimestoppers-uk.org
“Trading Standards, in co-operation with partners like the police, is working hard to crack down on fraudsters of this kind and we need your help to do so. If you receive a scam call of this nature, please report it to Cheshire Police or Crimestoppers and be sure not to give the caller any personal details.”
Anyone with concerns about their council tax band can check it free of charge by contacting the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 501 501.
Alternatively they can go to www.direct.gov.uk for further information, or contact the council directly.
