GOVERNMENT minister Andrew Stunell came to Warrington to support local Liberal Democrats who are campaigning for a “yes” vote in the Alternative Vote referendum on May 5.
Mr Stunell, MP for Hazel Grove and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government, met borough council leader Ian Marks and other Liberal Democrats who are campaigning for a “Yes”.
Cllr Marks said: “The first-past-the-post system for electing MPs is past its sell-by date.
“Most MPs are elected with less than half of voters on their side. Governments are effectively elected only by voters in marginal seats, which is a very low proportion of contests. Under AV, instead of putting one ‘X’ on the ballot paper you list your preferences by writing in 1,2,3…. it’s very simple. If no candidate gets 50 per cent support at the first count, then voters’ second preferences are allocated until someone does gain 50 per cent support.”
