WARRINGTON Borough Council has joined forces with the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign to try and minimise food wastage during the World Cup.
Every year enough food to fill Wembley Stadium eight times over is thrown out in the UK – most of which could be eaten.
Many people are planning World Cup parties and barbecues over the next few weeks so the council is issuing advice on how to avoid wasting the food on offer.
A spokeswoman said: “We may find we have more food around than usual and end up throwing it away.
“Love Food Hate Waste has lots of quick and easy recipes to use up those leftovers.”
*Buffet and barbeque leftovers make great packed lunches the next day. Cold roast meat is delicious with pickle or chutney or add a dollop of leftover dip to a cold burger for a tasty lunch the next day.
*Most fruit and vegetables can be kept in the fridge to maximise freshness, however bananas – the sportsman’s staple – are best kept in the fruit bowl.
*Empty bottles and cans should be placed in the blue recycling bins.
