A WARRINGTON-based canal boat project has been praised in a House of Commons awards scheme.
The Canal Boat Adventure Project, based at Preston Brook, received a special commendation voted for by Members of Parliament.
It was nominated by Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall MP – a Warrington resident and former borough councillor – at a prestigious reception at Westminster
Representatives from the project joined politicians and sporting celebrities, including Olympic Gold Medalist Linford Christie, on the Terrace at the House for the third annual Kids Count Inspiration Awards.
Awards recognise organisations that have inspired young people in the community.
Mr Hall said: “The Canal Boat Adventure Project Nessie Club operates a social inclusion project for young people from the poorest wards. This unique project has been developed and managed by a group of seven young people who were originally referred to the project as failures or under-achievers.
“The young people have produced innovative and groundbreaking programmes that have addressed physical and emotional health and under-achievement issues.”
He said the project helps youngsters develop self confidence and self respect and tackles issues such as drug abuse, anger management and debt management.
“Against all the odds, these young people are meeting the challenges of going to university, getting jobs and volunteering abroad. They are healthy, informed young citizens and fully equipped to tackle the world of work and responsibility,” he said.
He praised chairman/volunteer manager Norma Hornby who, he said, was the “driving force behind the project.”
