SHOPPERS in Warrington can help set a new world banana eating record.
If they visit the Fish Market in Golden Square on Saturday, March 7, they will find the Warrington Fairtrade Borough steering group taking part in a global Fairtrade banana eating event.
The aim is to set a new world record for the number of individuals eating a Fairtrade banana over a 24 hour period all around the world.
Warrington’s leg starts at 10.30am with registration and banana purchasing. There will be entertainment and short speeches from community leaders before the communal “banana eat” at 11.30am.
One of the organisers, Rev Stephen Kingsnorth said: “The aim is to significantly increase national sales of Fairtrade bananas, thereby sending a clear message to supermarkets that there is great demand for this product.”
He said the event was also to raise awareness of Fairtrade benefits and to support the town’s application for renewal of its Fairtrade Borough status.
