PCSOs may be in for a shock

SEVEN Police Community Support Officers will learn today (Saturday) just how far they have walked on duty over the last fortnight.
They have been set the unusual challenge of walking more than 500 miles – the equivalent of a trip to Warrington’s twin town, Hilden.
On September 26 they were issued with pedometers so they can monitor the distance they walk around the town centre while on duty.
Their travels are being plotted on a special map which will be on display at Warrington Bus Interchange between 10am and noon – when the PCSOs will learn just how far their work has taken them and whether they have nearly completed their target
Inspector Richard Reeves, who is in charge of the town centre unit, said: “People will probably be surprised by just how far the PCSOs travel on foot as they go about their daily duties.
“Since we handed over the pedometers last month they have been busy out and about on patrol and they will continue to plot their progress on a map for everyone to see.”
A special PCSO stand, which features the map and details of the challenge, has been on display in the town centre and proved popular with passers-by.
Insp. Reeves said: “We had a great response last time and it was really encouraging to see so many people turn up to talk to us. I would urge as many people as possible to come along this weekend.
“We want people who are visiting the town on a daily basis – whether that is for work or to shop or socialise – to come along and talk to us about any issues or concerns they have in relation to the town centre.”
The stand will move to different locations in the town centre during the next few months.
