CROWDS flocked to Warrington Market’s first major farmers’ market ensuring it was a great success.
More than 20 approved traders took to the streets to create a festival atmosphere and were joined by several traders from the indoor market.
All produce on sale had been grown, reared, caught, brewed, baked, smoked or processed by the stall holder.
Many of the traders sell a range of products produced locally, which meet established guidelines for a farmers’ market.
It was such a huge success that many traders, including Weatheroak Farm who specialises in Ostrich meat reared on their own farm in Lancashire, sold out of stock due to high demands.
There was also plenty of fun and entertainment for all the family including a chance to ride the Rodeo Bull!
A wide range of farmers’ market produce is already available from the indoor market all year round.
Coun Bob Barr, Executive Board member for planning and regeneration, said: “The market created such a vibrant atmosphere around the town and it was great to see so many people come along. It was a wonderful success and shows the level of concern customers have about where fresh produce comes from.
“You can be confident you are buying the freshest, most local produce possible, supporting your local community and economy, and helping the environment by reducing food-miles.
“Farmers markets are also a great way of trying new produce – if you spot something interesting or have never tried before – speak to the traders, they are always happy to talk about where their products come from.”
Many of the farmers and stall holders who attended are keen to run another farmers’ market in the town centre and are looking forward to returning to Warrington.
A short film was made during the day and will be available for viewing very soon on the market section of the council website and on the television screens inside the market.
