Vision of town that's a joy to walk round

A VISION of a Warrington that is a “joy” to walk around, with attractive waterfronts, streets and public spaces, has been created by transportation chiefs.
The new Warrington Transport Framework focuses on reducing car travel, traffic congestion and regeneration over the next 10 years.
The user-friendly document, a version of the Local Transport Plan, has been approved by the borough council’s executive board.
It sets out a programme of work to deliver transport schemes, improvements and regeneration. It is linked to the council’s Regeneration Framework and will help to deliver the continued regeneration of the borough.
The framework aims to create a transport network that is integrated, customer-focused, reduces the need for travel by car and enables regeneration of the borough.
It aims to maintain highways, reduce congestion and improve accessibility to health, employment, education, culture and leisure, especially for those living in disadvantaged communities.
A boost to the quality of life for borough residents and to the image of the town is also part of the plan with measures such as improving neighbourhoods and residential areas and making the town more welcoming.
Aims also include improving public space, making the town safer and healthier and reducing the impact of traffic on air quality.
To start the decade of developments, the council is submitting funding bids to the Government for three of the main initiatives. They are Network Warrington+ (improving public transport), Warrington Waterfront (to improve this area of town) and Cycle Warrington (to provide additional routes).
Coun Alan Litton, executive member for environment services, said: “We want to deliver real improvements to the transport systems in Warrington and approval of this framework means that we are one step closer to delivering services that will make a difference to people’s everyday lives.
“Our vision is that Warrington is a place that’s easy to travel around in, where it’s a joy to walk with attractive waterfronts, streets and public spaces – a place to live, enjoy and do business.”
