ONE of the town’s oldest walking day events is set to celebrate a special diamond milestone, tomorrow, Saturday.
Dating back to c.1879 Lymm May Queen is one of Warrington’s oldest events. It’s continuity was only broken during the second world war and celebrates its 60th (diamond) anniversary since its revival.
As a result the theme for tomorrow’s parade is diamonds and the sixties for the floats.
The procession will assemble at the old council offices at 1pm where adults and children board their floats representing the schools, clubs or associations they belong to.
The parade starts its journey through Lymm village centre at 1.30 with bands and dancers marching and performing between the various floats.
After the parade the festivities continue on the May Queen field off Pepper Street where the magic really begins.
From approximately 2.30 pm all the participants assemble at the arena where the queens ascend the thrones waiting to be crowned after the parade of characters.
This year’s May Queen is 13-year-old Hayley Billington a model pupil of Lymm High School, a potential place of work for Hayley as she is considering a career as a teacher or nurse.
Her hobbies include swimming, riding her bike, listening to McFly and spending time with her best friend Jess.
Antonia Willis is this year’s Rose Queen. This energetic eight-year-old enjoys all kinds of dance including ballet, tap and modern. She attends Cherry Tree Primary school and will be escorted in the parade by her big sister Abi who will be marching with the Air Training Corp.
Hayley will be crowned by Peter Powell who will lead the Parade as Town Crier. Peter is recognised as one of the country’s best criers and has been to Buckingham Palace.
Antonia will be crowned by Yvonne Cook who has been Clerk to the Parish Council for the last eight years.
The Queens and invited dignatories including the recently elected Mayor of Warrington, Coun Graham Welborn will enjoy various acts in the arena including a Dixie Jazz Band, Brass Band and a drill display by the A.T.C. For younger V.I.P.s there will be a brand new stage show by the ever popular Crazy Bears.
There will also be a variety of stalls selling a mix of crafts including hand made cards and jewellery to books and bric a brac and the usual tombolas and lucky dips.
