Market traders climb to success

MORE than 80 traders and staff from Warrington Market chose an unusual way to celebrate winning a national
award – they climbed to the top of a hill.
They took part in a sponsored walk at Rivington Pike to celebrate their “highly commended” status and raised £2,500 for charity.
The market was praised at the UK Market of the Year competition for their efforts in serving the community. Once they reached the top of Rivington Pike, traders displayed a large banner saying “Warrington Market, Highly Commended”, which was filmed by helicopter.
Money raised by the trek will be divided between the MS Society and St Rocco’s Hospice.
Market manager Stephen Pickering said: “This was a fun event and everybody really enjoyed the walk. I’m very grateful to Tansey’s coach company, which donated the coaches for the event.
“This walk was about the traders doing something for the community and showed why they are highly commended on a national level.”
One of the party put in a special effort on the day. Steve Stringer from Mr Snips Barbers missed the coach from the market and had to drive to Rivington in his own car.
He arrived late, and completed the walk on his own to raise £100. In his hurry to get down and join the others he slipped several times in the mud and said he looked like “a monster from the swamp!” at the end of the day.
A film of the event can be viewed on the market television screens inside the market, and also on the Warrington Market website at www.warringtonmarket.co.uk
