POLICE at Warrington have issued a warning about counterfeit £20 notes believed to be circulating in the town.
A number of dud notes have been passed – and members of the public are being urged to check the validity of all notes which come into their possession.
A police spokesman said: “People should be particularly concerned about notes tendered for small value purchases.”
He said security features on £20 notes were easily seen. Printing should be sharp and the watermark – a portrait of the Queen – should be visible when the note is held up to the light.
Police also warned members of the public to be on the look-out for fake £50 notes, or even £10 notes.
A feature of genuine notes was that the ink never really dries, meaning that some of the colour will come off when it is rubbed on a piece of white paper.
