Confident children who enjoy school

CONFIDENT children who enjoy school have been praised in report by education watchdog Ofsted.
Pupils from Oakwood Avenue Primary School were commended in the report, with school also being recognised for having “innovative, exciting projects to help children to enjoy their learning.”
The school’s achievements have also been recognised locally as a number of other schools have visited Oakwood to find out more about initiatives such as Morning Meetings, the Year 6 Ultra Mobile (UMPC) and handheld computers Project, which all run at the school.
Inspectors singled out innovation and the introduction of the “Oaky curriculum” as having a positive impact on the children’s attitude to learning.
They were also very complimentary about the enrichment activities the school provides, stating that: “Enrichment activities include a good range of visits, visitors to school and blocks of time devoted to particular projects. The school provides a good range of extra-curricular activities.”
All aspects from “a very welcoming school” to “very high quality care” were highlighted by Ofsted chiefs.
The school will now be focusing on areas of improvement, such as leadership and management of Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, standards in English, mathematics and science, teaching and learning, and assessment and evaluation of children’s progress.
Head teacher Michael Jackson said: “The next 12 months is going to be challenging – but all challenges can be exciting. I am particularly pleased about all the positive aspects of school life that are highlighted in this report.
“We will take on board all the recommendations in the report and we have already started to look at ways in which we can improve. We are sure that we will come out at the end of this journey even stronger than we are now.”
Ann-Marie Berry, chairman of Governors, added: “Staff at Oakwood are caring and supportive and will be working with the local education authority on securing improvements. We are confident that we can make many changes for the better and for every child at our school.”
