Residents oppose tip extension

ANGRY residents demonstrated outside Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium at the start of the public inquiry in proposals to extend the Risley Landfill site.
Demonstrators, many wearing green, carried banners denouncing the plan put forward by waste company Biffa.
The inquiry will decide if the company can press ahead with its plans to extend the life of the tip until 2010, taking in acres of farmland. Originally tipping operations were scheduled to end later this year.
Warrington Borough Council, Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, Birchwood Town Council and a local “stop the tipping” action group are opposing the scheme.
The inquiry, which follows the borough council refusing planning consent twice, is expected to last six days.A decision is likely to be announced in about six months.
