STUDENTS from Lymm-based Gendai Martial Arts have been amongst the medals at two recent karate championships.
At the prestigious UK Open Championship, Sensei Dave Shipton took gold medals in both the kata and the kumite disciplines to become senior UK Open champion, while Helen Darlington took silver in the ladies kumite and Lymm High School student Joseph Shard came home with silver in junior kata.
In the subsequent British Shotokan Open Championship, a few weeks later, students from Gendai again demonstrated their skill and commitment by winning a total eight medals, meaning Gendai was one of the most successful clubs to enter the championship.
Medal winners included Kay Fletcher (silver kata/silver kumite), Amy Fearnhead (bronze kumite), Matthew Shard (silver kumite), Emily Daly (silver kumite), Luke Daly (bronze kumite), Joseph Shard (silver kumite) and Sensei Colin Tarrant (bronze kumite).
Club Chief Instructor, Sensei Shipton said: “The recent success of the club is quite incredible, I am very proud of each and every student. Many students had never before entered a karate competition and to not only have the courage to enter, but to also come away with medals at national level is something very special. For me to be crowned national champion in both kata and kumite disciplines is just the icing on the cake.”
Meanwhile, Lymm High School student Harry McMullan passed his 1st grading. After almost five years of dedicated training and practise Harry was invited to grade and satisfied the grading panel that he had the required level of skill worthy of the coveted black belt.
