FORMER MP Faisal Rashid and Labour Party members in south Warrington have warmly welcomed the council’s revised local plan which incorporates greater protection of green belt, drops Peel Holdings’ Port Warrington scheme and removes the garden suburb proposal.
Faisal , chair of the Warrington South Constituency Labour Party, said: “The revised local plan is the beginning of the statutory process of balancing the competing demands of protecting the green belt, and planning for necessary new homes, commercial, industrial and recreational sites. This is not an easy thing to do.
“We welcome changes to the local plan that have been made possible because of the Central Government U-turn reducing its inflated new house building target previously imposed on Warrington.
“This is a significant victory for the future of the town.
“The revised local plan protects more of the green belt, scraps Port Warrington and the garden suburb proposal.
“The revised local plan demonstrates we have a Labour council that is determined to implement a planning framework that manages future development in a sustainable way benefiting all our residents and offering maximum possible protection of our green belt.
“The revised local plan will rightly be subjected to very close scrutiny. The Warrington South Labour Party will play a full part in this necessary process.
“We welcome the inclusion of the Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station site in the revised local plan.
“However, we also recognise the vast majority of residential, industrial and commercial development in Warrington over the past 20 years and more has been in the north-west part of the town.
“Any proposed redevelopment of the Fiddler’s Ferry site must not have an adverse effect on Penketh, Cuerdley, Great Sankey and Chapelford local residents in terms of the enjoyment of their homes, congestion, traffic pollution, over development and access to local services.
“Furthermore, the redevelopment of this site must take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand and reinforce the green belt in north-west Warrington.
“We hope that all the local interest groups, community groups, parish councils and political parties will work constructively to improve the local plan and provide a clear vision, an agreed blueprint and planning framework for the town for the next 20 years.”

The Local Plan hasn’t been warmly received where I live.
I’m absolutely furious that Peel Hall remains in the draft plan. The public consultation was extremely clear on this – local people DON’T WANT 1,200 houses to be built on Peel Hall. The traffic chaos alone would be untenable. Not to mention that the poor souls who’d end up living in those homes would face noise pollution on a scale we haven’t seen in Warrington.
We’re waiting for the outcome of the lastest Public Inquiry. At the previous two enquiries, the presence of Peel Hall in the Council’s draft Plan was seized on gleefully by Satnam’s team.
Finally – the Poulton North Labour candidates made great play of Peel Hall in their election leaflets. We’ll be watching how you vote.
