WARRINGTON’S latest COVID-19 hotspots have been revealed as residents were warned, during a live broadcast from the borough council, that they are likely to face further lockdown restrictions as cases continue to rise across the town.
Council Leader Cllr Russ Bowden, Chief Executive Steven Broomhead and Director of Public Health Thara Raj took part in a pioneering live broadcast to explain the authority’s approach to tackling the virus and to reinforce the key messages for tackling the virus.
Opening the broadcast, which is set to be repeated next week, Mr Broomhead said: “There are rumours further restrictions are coming in for Warrington and possibly other surrounding areas.
“We have had no information on that yet but from what we’ve seen today in the North East of England, a series of restrictions have been brought in for that area.”
He said the council was awaiting a further announcement which was expected ‘very, very shortly’, as to what the further restrictions ‘maybe for Warrington’.
He went on to praise the positive way Warrington had tackled the virus and it was “sad and disappointing” that cases had spiked as everybody had been working very hard.
Cllr Bowden warned the matter could be taken out of the council’s hands if the rate of increase wasn’t stemmed and the situation could change ‘very rapidly’.
He said the recent outbreaks had taken Warrington “over the threshold” resulting in the Government and Public Health England focusing more on Warrington.
This was behind the council’s reasoning in urging residents not to visit each other at home, as there was evidence this was where most infections were being passed on.
He warned that there could be some ‘enhanced restrictions’ in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Ms Raj talked about the importance of supporting each other through difficult times and while she was aware of the “doom and gloom, happiness and well being is really important.
She talked about the problems involving local testing and said the council was working very hard to get local testing facilities in Warrington – which are expected to arrive on September 24.
She also stressed that people should only get tested if they displayed the classic symptoms of Covid-19.
Washing hands, wearing face coverings and social distancing of two metres was the best way to avoid infection.
Latest figures show new cases are continuing to increase in Warrington with Hospital inpatient cases increasing from 3-15 in the past week, including two in intensive care and one new death.
