WARRINGTON’S Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School has set up a virtual transition package to help Year 7 students due to start at the school in September.
The Boteler Transition Support webpage is updated every Monday, and shared with parents, carers and students via email and social media.
The idea is to aid the transition from primary to high school during these unprecedented times. Ordinarily, the school would provide many transition sessions, from information evenings to subject taster sessions, which cannot now go ahead in the usual fashion due to Covid-19.
Boteler Transition Support so far has included: Videos from Year 7 students answering questions from Year 6 students, discussions about the school’s Anti-Bullying ambassador programme, and alumni students have spoken about their experience when they very first joined the school. Heads of departments have set challenges and both the pastoral, teacher and senior leadership teams have delivered messages about various aspects of the school. A virtual school tour has also been created.
One parent, Heather Davies, commented: “I’d like to say how impressed we’ve been with the transition support the school has been providing in these strange and difficult times. The weekly videos and all of the information posted on the website have been brilliant and really helped my daughter to feel connected to her new school. We are more than ever, certain that she has chosen the right high school and will be very happy!”
Assistant headteacher Anna Mawby said: “We pride ourselves on delivering a comprehensive Year 6 transition package to enable all our students to be prepared for Year 7 learning at Sir Thomas Boteler.. We feel that it is essential that students are ready both academically and pastorally, and we work closely with our primary schools and families to make this happen.”
Headteacher Mrs Beverley Scott-Herron added: “It is so important that each school has detailed knowledge and understanding of all their students that will be joining them, so they know their individual strengths and areas they would like to focus on. Through the relationships with our primaries, we start our transition in Year 4, involving the students in our events at school. This work lays the foundations and then we build on this through Year 5 and into Year 6, with a summer camp just before they begin in September.”
