Have you ever wondered what do Carey Mulligan, Sally Hawkins, Tilda Swinton, Imelda Staunton and Greta Gerwig have in common?

Well, according to a recent report compiled by the website bingofind.com, they are the top 5 actresses you are most likely to see in a good movie. They have used a combination of the 881 highest grossing actors and actresses who appeared in movies as per Box Office Mojo and then they used Metacritic to see how people reacted to those actresses and their movies. The sentiment was categorized as positive, mixed and negative, that resulted into their average career score. A complex formula, but the findings are very interested indeed!

#1 Carey Mulligan

The London-born star, who is only 34, made it to the top of the list with a total average score of 71. While her blockbuster appearances are limited to The Great Gatsby, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Public Enemies, she is best known for her roles in small budget and independent movies such as Mudbound, Drive and Pride & Prejudice. Her biggest accolade so far is her BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the 2009 movie An Education.

#2 Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins, another English actress, is a close runner-up with a score of 70. While her positive sentiment is higher than the one of Carey Mulligan, 80 vs 71, her mixed score is lower. Though most people will probably know her from her role in the popular Paddington 2 movie, which still has an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, opposite Hugh Grant and Hugh Bonneville, she was also nominated for two Academy Awards. The first nomination was for Best Supporting Actress in Blue Jasmine in 2014 and for Best Actress in The Shape of the Water in 2018. Unfortunately for her, she lost both times, to Lupita Nyong’o and Frances McDormand, respectively.

#3 Tilda Swinton

With the second highest positive score from all actresses, Tilda Swinton makes her way into the list at number 3. The English-born actress is not only known for her grand appearances at the Cannes film festival, but also for her acting chops. In 2003 she won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actress for the film Young Adam and in 2007 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the Tony Gilroy directed movie Michael Clayton, starring opposite George Clooney.

#4 Imelda Staunton

Imelda Staunton arrives at number 4 with a score of 68. She has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including huge blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1 and the Order of the Phoenix, Disney’s Maleficent and its sequel, while she voiced the ‘Tall Flower Faces’ in Alice in Wonderland and Queen Victoria in the animated The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Now she is ready to take on another royal, that of Queen Elizabeth II, in the final season of the popular TV show The Crown.

#5 Greta Gerwig

The first American actress to make it into the list is Greta Gerwig, the 36-year-old from Sacramento in California with a score of 68. She has appeared in several movies, including To Rome with Love, Jackie and 20th Century Women, but it was not until late 2019 that she received rave reviews for directing the adaptation of Little Women, a movie that went on to collect over $206 million at the worldwide box office.

Final Thoughts

As you can probably tell, you don’t really need to appear in global blockbusters to find your name into a list with the actors, or in this case actresses, that are more likely to appear in a good movie. On the contrary, if you take a minute to check out the entire report, you will see that actors who have appeared in movies with a greater audience appeal, tend to find their name higher up the list to the actors and actresses that you are likely to see in a bad movie.
