New MP to act over rusting canal bridges

MP Andy Carter

NEW Warrington South MP Andy Carter is to take swift action to try and speed up renovation work on the swing bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal at Warrington.
He is to meet Stockton Heath Conservative council candidates Steve Allcock and Lyndsey Olsen in the next few days to agree a joint approach to bridge owners Peel Ports to try and get work started on the rusting bridges.
Mr Allcock said: “We’ve been pushing both Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council for updates on renovating the swing bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal during 2019. Peel have co-operated and drip-fed updates through, whereas our borough council leader has been radio silent.
“We wrote to Peel just before Christmas and received a disappointing update that no meetings had taken place since September, for various undisclosed reasons.
“Yet ‘planning is still going ahead’. This was in spite of being told that a further meeting was to be held in the Autumn.
“We responded straight away to this news and asked for further details on what these plans are – even if they are just initial thinking and not formally agreed. We’re waiting for an update to this request. The time for communication and an update is long overdue in our opinion.
“We will be meeting with Andy Carter MP in the next few days, to discuss and agree a joint approach to get this important matter moving.”
In addition to an urgent need to improve the appearance of the swing bridges – which currently provide a depressing gateway to Warrington – they also need engineering works.
The Stockton Heath bridge has “stuck” several times in recent months, causing traffic chaos.

  1. wouldn’t be to hard getting theses bridges looking decent again, have done sand?shot-blasting for several years,
have done small trailers to large trailers, small houses to 7 story mills,
even done the sandblasting in the subway at thellwall prior to them having the art work done,
retired know, but would be willing to do this for day rate saving owners and council a load of cash,
