FIREWORKS were going off in Warrington North as Labour’s National Executive selected London based Charlotte Nichols as the candidate to replace Helen Jones at the forthcoming General Election.
The young activist, who describes herself on twitter as “Ginger, Jewish, Trade Union officer,” went through a selection process from a list of seven candidates but was chosen by the National Executive, despite an impassioned plea from the Warrington North CLP, to be able to select their own candidate.
Nichols, aged 27 and based in Islington, works as a GMB national research and policy officer and has become well-known in the labour movement as a Jewish activist on the left of the party.
She was a volunteer on Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership campaigns in 2015 and 2016 and has previously been elected to the role of Young Labour women’s officer.
Warrington North is currently a safe Labour seat. Helen Jones won with a majority of 9,582 in 2017 and the constituency has returned Labour MPs since its creation in 1983.
Labour applicants Amanda King, Jeanie Bell, Erica Lewis, Sam Marshall, Lauren Cassidy and Nazia Rehman were also interviewed.
One of the first to congratulate Ms Nichols was former Warrington South Labour candidate Nick Bent, who posted on twitter that he was “delighted with the news.”
But the selection has caused fireworks with some CLP members in the North.
One party insider said: “This is a real slap in the face for local democracy. Some members are so upset they are considering resigning from the party.
“I can’t really comment on the selection as I know nothing about the candidate.”
