The 2019-20 season is set to get underway later this month, and Warrington Town FC have been listed by oddsmakers as one of the favorites to earn promotion.
Warrington are listed at 12/1 by BetVictor to earn promotion into the National League North to begin next season. That gives the Yellows the third-best odds for promotion along with FC United of Manchester and Scarborough Athletic.
Warrington Town have never been at a division higher than the Northern Premier League. However, the fact that they came to within a goal of securing promotion last season has sportsbooks optimistic regarding their chances of doing so in 2019-20. That said, if you know how bookmakers make money, you’ll understand that 12/1 odds for promotion aren’t exactly a sure thing.
Warrington finished third in the table last season with an overall record of 25-9-6.
Warrington thrashed Nantwich Town 4-1 in the semi-finals before beating South Shields 2-1 in the Final. However, the Yellows were beaten 3-2 by King’s Lynn Town in the Super Final to finish out the campaign. Both Warrington Town and King’s Lynn Town would have been promoted in a normal year, but the rules forced the Northern Premier and Southern Premier playoff winners to face off in a bid for promotion.
So, Warrington will be battling it out again with similar foes with hopes of securing promotion this time around. Warrington beat Scarbrough 2-0 in their home head-to-head fixture a season ago, but Scarborough picked up a 1-0 triumph over the Yellows in the other match.
FC United of Manchester, meanwhile, were relegated from National League North after a disastrous 21st-place finish last season. The side went just 8-10-24 in the league. The Manchester-based club spent four seasons in National League North after being crowned as Northern Premier League Premier Division champions back in 2014-15.
Warrington Town will be entering their fourth consecutive campaign in the Northern Premier League. The Yellows finished 10th in their first season in the division back in 2016-17, but they have since followed that up with back-to-back third-place finishes. Warrington were promoted into the division after winning Northern Premier League Division One North in 2015-16.
Warrington’s best-ever finish in the FA Cup also came when they advanced to the second round during the 2014-15 season. The Yellows toppled Exeter 1-0 in the first round before falling at the hands of Gateshead (2-0) in the next round.
The Yellows will begin their fight for promotion with a match against Morpeth Town at Cantilever Park on August 17. They will have a playoff rematch against Nantwich Town at home on September 3, followed by what should be a thrilling clash against FC United of Manchester on September 24. The first league fixture against Scarborough will come away from home 4 days later on September 28.
