The Fifa Women’s World Cup has dazzled and entertained and has put the women’s game on the world stage. The game has produced some astonishing results, and like the male counterpart, the tournament has produced the same glorious and heartbreaking moments.
Incidentally, the Coral promo code can be used to get some good odds as we approach the final.
So who are the ladies that have stood out in the tournament?
Alex Morgan – USA
Alex Morgan stamped her authority on the game and her quest for the Golden Boot netting five times in America’s historic 13-0 win over Thailand. Although her subsequent games in the knockout stages were relatively quiet, she netted again in the country’s 2-1 win over England.
A contender for the Golden Boot she only has to net one more time to have a great chance of picking up the converted trophy. In fact, her nearest rival to winning the Golden Boot is fellow American Megan Rapinoe who missed the semi-final with an injury.
Morgan has a knack of being in the right place at the right time to put her country ahead. She is powerful, athletic and in many ways, epitomises how the country approaches a match.
Lieke Martens – Netherlands
Lieke Martens is a bit of an unsung heroine of the Dutch team. So far she has netted three times, but arguably her best contribution has come from her wing play. She has an ability to shine in the big games, and the next two games for the Dutch woman don’t come any bigger.
In 2017 Martens was named Fifa’s player of the year, and since then she has improved. Fullbacks across the world have struggled to stop her so far in this tournament, and if she can maintain form, then the Netherland girls may be able to lift the trophy.
Martens plays her domestic football at the highest level, gracing Spanish team FC Barcelona week in week out. This experience will be invaluable as she approaches her next challenge.
Her last-minute penalty winner against Japan underlines the woman’s professionalism and abilities.
Ellen White – England
Ellen White’s brilliant strike against America underlined the woman’s immaculate performances she has given throughout the tournament. Arguably the Lioness’ move that led to the equaliser was one of the best goals of the competition.
That goal was her sixth of the 2019 World Cup. She has scored more goals than any other English female player in the history of this tournament. White netted again against America, but the goal was ruled out when a VAR decision placed her as being a few millimetres offside.
The English team were very much underdogs in the competition, and some argue they punched above their weight. That said, that despite the power and athleticism they faced in the form of the American team, they could have taken the game into extra time if it was not for a penalty miss.
White, Morgan, and Martens have been stars of the tournament, and there have been many others. They have proved they can play and compete and have entertained us since the first kick.
