THE word “iconic” has been much overused in recent years and been applied to everything from the Queen’s hats to Donald Trump’s hair!
But if the definition is “an item of distinctive excellence that symbolises a style or an era” then organisers of this years Lymm Historic Transport Day on June 23 have no hesitation in describing the star of this year’s as event as, truly iconic.
The mere mention of the registration plate 77 RW is enough to set the pulse of any classic motoring enthusiast racing. The number can be found on the bonnet of an immaculate 1961 E type Jaguar open two-seater. But this is not just any E type.
It’s the original testbed vehicle that was historically driven through the night to the Geneva motor show that year where it caused a sensation. The E-type’s looks were simply stunning while its performance was unbeatable. So it was hardly surprising that the new model quickly became a glamorous symbol of the 1960s.
Today the car is on permanent loan to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust thanks to the generosity of long-term owner Michael Kilgannon. Just occasionally 77 RW will grace a show or special event including, recently, Pippa Middleton’s wedding. So organisers are enormously honoured to welcome it to Lymm.
The appearance of this unique motor car was arranged via one of the Transport Day team – Philip Oldfield who can also be seen on the weekend of the event trundling up and down the field behind the line marker setting out the hundreds of “pitches” for visitors and exhibitors. Philip, who lives in Lymm judges at a number of car shows around the country has been working in the background over a number of years to try and persuade the owners that Lymm would be a great place to show this unique car.
“Thanks to Phil and, of course, the owner this is another amazing coup for Lymm” said Event Director Alan Williams, “and is yet another step up for our event which just seems to keep going from strength to strength”.
77 RW may be top of the bill but there are so many other reasons for making sure you don’t miss this incredible event. As well as a fly past by an RAF Dakota (weather permitting) there will be hundreds of classic vehicles ranging from historic boats to traction engines, bicycles, cars and militaria.
It’s a real family affair too with Lego and model railways plus boat, miniature steam engine and vintage bus rides on offer
Throw in some live music, a world food court, markets and entertainers and it all adds up to an unforgettable day out.
And at just £12 for a family of four – including parking – it should be a day out all the family can afford. “As a parent and grandparent myself I know how the cost of a day out can mount up” explained Main Event Field Manager John Parry. “ There are a few extras you can go for during the day of course but there is a huge amount to enjoy just based on £3 per member of a family group”
In fact it has all the makings of a pretty iconic event !!

The Lynn Transport Festival is a fantastic community event and I look forward to it every year. I know the E Type is a superb vehicle but for me the most iconic appearance last year was without doubt the Spitfire flyover. It gave me goosebumps.
