MEMBERS of Warrington Borough Council’s Executive Board will make a decision on the future of the Stockton Heath Recycling Centre on Monday evening.
As things stand, if they follow officer advice, they will close it – leaving the south of the borough without a facility.
Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid has already urged the Executive Board not to close the Stockton Heath facility until a replacement is found, while local councillors and many local residents have campaigned for the existing facility to remain open.
The alternative of having to travel across town to either Woolston or Gatewarth does not make sense, as all it will do is add to our already congested roads and pollution problems.
A consultation by the borough council over the future of the facility saw more than 1,000 people oppose the closure, with another 3,000 signing a petition. If the council isn’t prepared to listen to the people following a consultation, it begs the question why bother having a consultation in the first place?
The people have spoken and the vast majority clearly want to retain this facility and at the very least, no closure should take place until an alternative solution can be found.
Recycling is becoming more and more important for the very future of our planet and we certainly need to do more to encourage people to use their cars less.
Closing this facility will be a double whammy on our environment! The people have spoken and those who have been elected to represent the people should listen!

Well argued Gary. Why indeed have public consultations if the council decides to do what wants regardless of the strength of local opinion.
