Love and Retirement – Top Destinations

0

Retirement is a huge milestone in our lives, allowing us the freedom to do all the things we haven’t had a chance to when we were busy with a career.

It’s time to be a bit selfish and do whatever we want! So why not celebrate this with a vacation to kick off the best years of your life? And you know, there is now a name for this. It’s called the ‘retiremoon.’ Forget the honeymoon or babymoon – this is the vacation to kick off your retirement and celebrate all the hard work you’ve put in to get you to this place where you are now able to spend your days doing what you love.

What makes honeymoons and babymoons so special is the opportunity to spend time with your partner, just the two of you. One is to celebrate a beginning – the other is to celebrate the last time you can spend together as just a couple for a long while. The retiremoon is a huge welcome to a new stage in your relationship, when you can celebrate finally being able to devote most of your time to your partner. No kids, no busy mornings – a completely new routine! This is so hard to get used to, and sometimes it’s a scary concept. A great way to get to know each other in a new light again is an adventurous trip – not just a weekend getaway, but a more ambitious and daring escapade into the unknown.

Read on to discover some of the most exciting and retiremoon-friendly trips all over the world – maybe you’ll see places that were on your bucket list for a long time, and maybe you’ll discover ideas you haven’t even considered yet!

Luxury Safari – Kenya
If you were to picture the typical African safari setting, it’s likely you are imagining Kenya, home to the beautiful Meru National Park and Masai Mara. Check out some of the luxury safari options, which take care of flights and make sure you stay in top-notch camps and resorts during your stay. Talk about glamping! And be sure to check out the famous Great Migration in Masai Mara, a must-see for anyone visiting these parts. If you have ever seen the romantic movie “Out of Africa”, you will know that it’s a perfect setting for a romantic African getaway. In fact, you can stay near some of the most romantic filming locations if you stay at Angama Mara – one of Kenya’s most amazing luxury resorts. They have a very special place in their hearts for romance and their Maasai staff will introduce you to local culture. Take a bit of Africa back home with you in the form of traditional Maasai beadwork. You can even take a walking safari and an herbal walk with a local naturalist. Kenya is a vast place where you can get lost and rediscover romance.

Chauffeur Drive – Ireland
Take a drive without the driving part. You can relax in the back seat with your honey, and take in the sites while someone else drives. This may not be the most talked about option for travel, but it’s out there – chauffeur tours of Ireland! Your chauffeur will be your private tour guide and offer you an experience and information you might just miss on your own. And Ireland, with its dramatic landscapes and fascinating history, is one the best destinations in Europe for a road trip. And what’s best about a private driver? Not having to worry about having one too many down at the local pub. Because let’s face it, a lot of Irish culture would be missed if you didn’t stop by a pub for a pint. There are also some amazing distilleries that you can visit for a tasting. Being driven around takes the edge off of planning and worrying about transport all together, and can be surprisingly affordable.

Kilimanjaro Climb – Tanzania
If you’re the adventurous type, I’m sure hiking Kilimanjaro is on your bucket list. While climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is nothing to take lightly, it is possible for those who are good physical condition, if they do the right research and prepare. It will be worth it, and you can celebrate your retirement 19,340 feet above sea level. To give context, there has been a seven-year-old and 84-year-old who have both successfully summited Kilimanjaro. No special equipment or skills are needed, just a will to make it to the top and good physical health and fitness. There are many luxury travel options to Kilimanjaro that involve premium accommodations as well as private, portable toilets (yes, this is a thing on Kilimanjaro) to make sure you are always comfortable and safe. This is one that requires more research and a visit to your doctor to determine if you should be attempting this. But for those who need more adrenaline, it is a great relationship team building exercise. You will need to train together and plan together before you start the climb!

Kayak with Orcas – British Colombia
Another exciting retiremoon option is to spend a few days in British Colombia sea kayaking. It’s popular to whale watch at the glacier-carved Johnstone Strait. This is the only place in the world that this is possible, as over 200 orca whales come through this strait in the summer months. And you don’t have to be in the kayak to enjoy viewing orcas pass by. The campsites are right on the shore, and you can even watch the orcas while sitting at camp or on the beach. This is a chance to get back to your rustic roots with your significant other. People usually camp for many days on those shores. So pack your kayak, cosy up by a fire and watch a sky light up like you’ve never seen it before. It might be the most romantic moment of your lives.

Retirement is meant to be a reward for your hard work. For some it means reflection, for some it means relaxing and still for others it means even more hard work. However actively (or not!) you decide to spend it, it’s worth a celebration.
