End of an era as iconic water tower set to be demolished

1

WARRINGTON Borough Council’s proposed demolition of the historic Garnett’s Cabinet Works has caused a storm of protest from local residents who are upset that the iconic water tower feature will be lost from the town’s skyline.

I for one will be sad to see it go and as a member of the local Civic Society would have loved to see it somehow retained as part of any new development.

Sadly, while it was in private ownership it was allowed to fall into a state of ruin and is now so dangerous it needs to come down sooner rather than later.

I suspect cost prohibits any meaningful attempt to retain the water tower, although it would be worth attempting to include something similar in any future development.

Over the years we have lost far too many historic buildings in Warrington and this will leave a big hole on our skyline.

On the plus side this will open up Warrington’s Cultural Quarter and link it up with the Time square development which is now gathering pace.

I have been impressed with the new temporary market and can’t wait to see the new one when it comes out onto Bridge Street through the old Boots building.

Hopefully then we will have a town centre we can be proud of.

  1. That’s not going to go down well! The council are currently very, very unpopular. Demolishing the tower may well prove to be the last straw! After the calls for resignations on Monday inciting more anger like this is as good as pressing the self destruct button!
