A life-saving defibrillator owned by the Scout Association has been installed outside the Scout Hut on Jackson Avenue in Culcheth.
Although Culcheth has a number of these life saving devices this is the first which will be accessible to the general public at any time. Part funded by Bents Garden & Home, it will supply help for the local community in emergency situations.
Bents donated £600 towards the external defibrillator cabinet which can be accessed by inserting a code given by the emergency services. The automated heart start device will talk people through what to do if someone suffers a cardiac arrest.
According to the British Heart Foundation website more than 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK each year with a less than 1 in 10 survival rate. It is proven that performing CPR can double the chance of survival.
Matthew Bent, Managing Director at Bents Garden & Home said: “We’ve had a defibrillator here at Bents for several years, which has been used on more than one occasion so we’re very aware of the benefits such a piece of equipment can provide.
“Providing access to something similar in a public place, which can be accessed quickly in an emergency could help save more lives. We’re delighted that we have been able to help with such a fantastic facility for our local community.”
Scout committee member, Darron Rathbone, who has been responsible for co-ordinating the project said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Bents for buying the first external defibrillator cabinet for Culcheth and also to Croft Engineering Services for strengthening the cabinet and J&K Electrical Contractors for fitting it. It has been a real community effort and one which we think will think will be of huge benefit for the people of Culcheth.”
