VIDEO: WARRINGTON’S town centre M&S store at Golden Square closed for the final time today (Saturday) leaving many shoppers, disappointed, angry and upset.
warrington-worldwide Edior Gary Skentelbery teamed up with local campaigner Adrian Derbyshire, who promotes his anti-hate crusade in memory of his daughter Julia in Golden Square ona regular basis, to take one last look inside the store before it closed, broadcasting live on Facebook.
More than 100 regular customers were queuing outside when it opened for the final time at 9am many of them angry and disappointed that it was closing.
M&S took the decision to close the store, as one of six clsoures across the country, because of peoples changing shopping habits, as more and more shop online.
But the Warrington store was still profitable but M&S are confident their regulars will now travel to Gemini or Stockton Heath to continue supporting the brand.
Warrington Borough Council held failed talks with M&S bosses in a bid to get them to change their mind and keep at least the Food Hall element of the business going.
M&S say no staff have lost their jobs as a result of the closure, with those wishing to remain being transferred to Gemini or Stockton Heath.

Yes it’s a shame it’s closed after being a town centre store for so long but if it wasn’t viable for it to stay open then it makes business sense. Give it a few weeks and most people will get over the loss and will shop either at the Westbrook store or stores elsewhere. To be hones I never really liked M&S anyway. Food was ok but the clothes there were overpriced and very limited in choice.
I suppose though with BHS also closing there’s not many shops left for the mare ‘mature’ ladies and gents in the town centre now apart from Hancock & Wood (ladies only) and Debenhams (ladies and gents).
