THE future of Lymm’s historic May Queen Festival, which had to be cancelled this year due to the dangerous state of the field, is under threat due to lack of funds.
The organising committee are busy organising fund-raising activities to secure the future of the event and this year’s crowning has been rescheduled as part of Lymm Festival.
Following the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Lymm May Queen on health and safety grounds, it will now form part of Lymm Festival events.
There will be no rescheduled May Queen event for 2017, but working alongside Historic Transport Day and Lymm Festival, there will be a parade and crowning ceremony for the May Queen, Rose Queen, and retinues.
On Historic Transport Day, Sunday June 25, the May Queen and Rose Queen floats will join the parade of vehicles through the village.
Then on Saturday July 1st, there will be a crowning ceremony at 2pm during the Lymm Festival Garden party at Lymm Hall.
May Queen Chairman Steve Harper said: “We would like to thank the community of Lymm for the support we have received following the decision to cancel, and would ask you to please support the Queens and retinue during the above events.
“We apologise to all the other groups who were scheduled to take part in Lymm May Queen; in the procession, Stall holders, Dancers, and the arena events, but unfortunately the logistics and financial implications made it impossible for us to stage the event in full again.
“Lymm May Queen is now in a very precarious financial position, and to enable the event to take place in future years we will be holding a number of fundraising events.”
These will include:
• A justgiving page currently running
• Race night at the Star Inn
• Live Music and Disco at Grappenhall & Thelwall Royal British Legion
• High Legh Teas
• Coffee morning at the Methodist Church
