Historic building faces uncertain future

PLANS to convert one of Warrington’s most historic buildings into state-of-the-art apartments are set for further
scrutiny from Town Hall officers.
Warrington Borough Council’s Development Control Committee decided a site visit was needed to determine whether to allow the plans on the site of Bewsey Old Hall.
Urban Splash ltd submitted two proposals to the committee to convert the Grade Two listed building into seven apartments, with a further 48 also being erected on the site.
There have been strong objections raised from neighbours, councillors and local organisations, who say there would be a loss of green space, increased traffic congestion and a disregard for the heritage site, should the plans be given the green light.
Planners have however committed to retaining some of the historical features of the building, creating a new ranger section and improving pedestrian access.
Bewsey Old Hall was originally built by William Fitz Almeric le Boteler and it was home to the Lords of Warrington from the 13th Century.
The manor house – described as Warrington’s “hidden gem” was lost in a gambling debt 700 years ago by the Boteler family.
It is reputed to be haunted and in 1997 a campaign was launched to turn it into a tourist attraction.
The future of the site remains uncertain until the site visit and another development control consultation has taken place.
