Andrew nets a national award

WARRINGTON Market has been giving the town national prominence again – thanks to a young fishmonger.
Andrew Leicester, aged 24, from Latchford has been named national “Young Fishmonger of the Year” by the BBC.
Andrew works on Andrew’s Fish, Game and Poultry stall on the market, which is run by his uncle, also named Andrew Leicester.
The former Boteler High School pupil entered the competition, broadcast on BBC 3 and fought his way through preliminary rounds to become one of four finalists, chosen from more than 100 entrants.
Then he went head-to-head with the other three finalists – and came out on top.
He said: “It was pretty challenging, but I really enjoyed it.
“Each of the four of us had particular strengths but the judges said I was consistent throughout.
“I started learning to be a fishmonger when I was 14 so I have been at it 10 years.
“Mostly, I have learned from my uncle – and I couldn’t have had a better teacher.”
Market manager Steve Pickering said: “Forget the X-Factor – we’ve got the fish factor.
“It really is great news for the market – it means we have another national award.”
Warrington Market has already been named as the best indoor market in the country.
