Black ice warning for motorists

5

POLICE at Warrington today urged drivers to take extra care due to treacherous conditions on local roads.
Early morning rain has instantly frozen, creating dangerous patches of black ice.
Pedestrians were also warned as hospitals braced themselves for a number of people suffering from broken limbs and bruising following falls on glassy pavements.
Cheshire Police flagged up the M62 at Croft as being particularly bad, but right across the Warrington area motorists were struggling to cope. Several collisions have already been reported.
Police said motorists should only make journeys that were absolutely necessary.
Cars should be fully defrosted, with fully visibility and drivers were advised to maintain a safe and constant speed, avoiding sudden braking which could lead to skidding.
The icy conditions led to queues on many roads into Warrington resulting in many people arriving late for work.
Health chiefs appealed to pensioners not to go out to collect their pensions today because of the treacherous conditions under foot.

  1. It’s AWFUL…… loads of accidents earlier between Stockon Health and Birchwood…. many busses have been cancelled. The roads simply look WET but it’s BLACK ICE.

Take note of the WARNING and like it says the rain froze immediately on hitting the surface.

  2. M62 closed at croft, M6 closed at Croft also, M62 slip at birchwood closed and huge pile up on East Lancs at Lowton closing the same. Grid lock in North Warrington.

  3. About time the police started to book drivers who don’t fully defrost their cars before setting off. Saw one woman this morning driving with a “porthole” of clear screen in front of her and two small strips on the drivers side window. The rest were covered in frost.

    Crazy!
