A WARRINGTON mum, whose two daughters have diabetes, is taking part in a “Santa Dash” to raise funds for Diabetes UK.
Sue Richardson will run in the Liverpool event on Sunday December 3.
Her daughters Jess, 14, and Rosie, 17, both have type one diabetes, an auto-immune condition treated with daily insulin injections, diet and physical activity. This type of diabetes cannot be prevented and it is not known why it develops.
Sue said: “People really underestimate diabetes. You think you have control and then one day you turn around and it bites you. I just thought if only people could see what people with the condition have to go through.
“I was devastated when I found out my elder daughter also had type one diabetes; I thought, ‘It can’t be happening again’. As a mum, you just want to take the condition away. Diabetes is a constant balancing act and it was really difficult trying to manage both my daughters’ diabetes. You are constantly clock watching.”
Sue said she was doing the Santa Dash for her children because she could not just “sit back and do nothing.”
Rachael Goodwin, fundraising manager for Diabetes UK North West, said: “We wish Sue all the best with her training and hope she has a fantastic dash with the thousands of other Santas.
“The money that Sue and so many others are raising will all go towards Diabetes UK’s vital work in funding research, raising awareness and providing information and support.”
