Warrington remembers fallen heroes

WARRINGTON’S fallen heroes were remembered during the annual service of remembrance at the war memorial on Bridge Foot today, including those who tragically died in the Afghanistan conflict.
The names of Marine Stephen Birdsall and Private Tom Sephton, the two young soldiers from Warrington, were remembered alongside Snr Aircraftsman Paul Mahoney of 15 Squadron, who died in an avalanche during a training exercise in Germany earlier this year.
All three names have been added to the Bridge Foot war memorial.
Large crowds attended the annual service which was led by Lt Col. Les Taylor-Duff TD who said: “They shall grow not old, as we that are left to grow old, Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”
Prayers and readings were given by Rev Canon Christopher Cunningham, Roman Catholic Dean of Warrington, Hazan Kazi, Council of Faiths, Captain Paul Fisher Free Church Civic represntative and the Mayor’s Chaplain Rev Canon Christopher Cunningham.
There was also a reading by 13-year-old Daniel Grundy from Warrington Sea Cadets.
The final prayer was given by the Rector of Warrington Revd. Canon Michael Finlay.
Mayor Coun John Joyce laid the first wreath, followed by local dignitaries and representatives of the armed forces and other local groups.
