MEMBERS of Warrington Wolves’ Challenge Cup-winning side may be made honorary citizens of the borough.
Council leader Ian Marks intends to present a paper on the idea at the next meeting of the borough council.
He said: “We want to do something to permanently recognise the Wolves’ fantastic success over the last two years in winning the Challenge Cup twice.
“We are investigating making the Warrington Wolves team honorary citizens of the borough, as we have previously done for the crew of HMS Turbulent and some of our existing town twinning citizens.
“I intend to bring a paper on this to the next full council and propose a motion to make them honorary citizens, which we hope will be a fitting tribute to their achievements.”
Coun Marks’ comments followed a suggestion from Coun Kevin Reynolds that following the back-to-back Challenge Cup victories, Warrington should be twinned with Wembley.
Coun Reynolds that twin town arrangements were co-operative agreements between towns or cities in geographically and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.
“After the magnificent double at Wembley, can the leader explore the opportunity of Warrington twinning with Wembley?”
Coun Marks pointed out that Wembley was not a town or a city, but an area around the stadium within the London borough of Brent.
“Brent already has its own town twinning arrangements with South Dublin, as we in Warrington have our links to various places, so sadly there is no opportunity to twin with Wembley itself!”

  1. It has to be better than honouring some politician, who has only ever been in it for themselves. These players are looked upto and respected in the community great idea.

  2. What’s an honorary citizen and what does it mean? If you are an honorary citizen do you get free bus travel etc 🙂 ? Also what is the idea behing ‘twinning’ with another area and again are there any benefits in doing so ?
