Warrington Town 9 Crewe United 0
WARRINGTON Town entertained Crewe United, their visitors from Northern Ireland, for the annual Peace Cup game.
Town were holders having triumphed 7-2 in Lisburn a year ago to the day. Town who were missing key midfielder Gareth Farrelly handed a debut to Anthony Hickey, who has signed from Vodkat league outfit Bootle.
Hickey was soon making his presence felt, stinging the palms of the visiting keeper early on. Town were obviously superior all over the field, and continued to boss the game, without actually finding the net, Rob Hardwick, Tom Hardwick and Tony Evans all going close.
Evans went closest to opening the scoring in the 22nd minute, when his shot on the spin, bounced away off the post.
Crewe had their best chance of the game soon after when their left winger beat two men but put his shot past the upright.
Town took the lead five minutes later when Hickey was felled in the box and Salmon stepped up to find the roof of the net. Town continued to be in charge of the game and captain Mike Tomlinson was next to go close, seeing his header go across the face of the goal. Five minutes before half time Town doubled their advantage when Salmon latched onto a through ball and rounded the keeper before slotting home.
The second half started as the first half had finished, with Town in control of the game, Rob Hardwick blasting narrowly over the bar early on. Mike Duffy was next to go close, forcing a save by the keeper from the edge of the box. Town made the game safe seven minutes into the second half, when Dave Ness slid in to convert Tony Evans’ centre from two yards, and two minutes later Evans made it four blasting home after seeing his initial effort blocked. Town were now rampant, and Evans went close soon after, volleying over the target. The introduction of substitutes gave Town fresh impetus, Salmon going close, soon after being denied by the keeper.
Substitute John Bathurst was next to find the target, slotting home fellow substitute Sam Finley’s cross. Soon after Town went even further ahead, Finley seeing his shot being cleared off the line only for substitute Levi Kennedy to blast into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Soon after young substitute Connor Anderson glanced home a header to make it seven for Town. The visitors were clearly out on their feet, but fell further behind when substitute Finley capped a fine performance with an excellent finish from Bathurst’s centre. The final goal of the game fell to fellow substitute Lee Thompson, who produced a mazy run to slot home and make it nine.
Town: Connett, Duffy, Ness (Kennedy, 60), T Hardwick, Tomlinson (c), R Hardwick (Finley, 60), Anthony Hickey (d) (Anderson, 70), Corrigan, Evans (Bathurst, 65), Salmon (Thompson, 65), Gahgan (Hedges, 70)
