Town start with a win

WARRINGTON Town started their pre season campaign with a visit from Vodkat league side AFC Liverpool, with Town showing a nice mixture of the old and new amongst those on display as they started their pre-season with a 2-0 win.
Town took the lead in the seventh minute with their first real attack, Louis Corrigan curling in an excellent freekick from the edge of the box, after debutant Gareth Farrelly (pictured right) was brought down by the visitors defence. Town continued to be in control of the game, debutant striker John Bathurst causing lots of problems for the visitors defence, indeed he saw his effort tipped onto the post shortly afterwards.
Mike Grogan was next to go close for Town, seeing his rasping volley smack away to saety off the crossbar. Town should have gone further ahead just before the half hour mark when Gavin Salmon rounded the keeper, only to see his shot kicked off the line by the visiting defence.
Town still had to be weary and the visitors forced a fine save from Connett who saved excellently a shot from the edge of the box, which travelled through a forest of legs before reaching him. The last chance of the half fell to Salmon, who this time was thwarted in his attempts to round the AFC keeper.
The second half began in much the same way, with Town in control of the game, but Connett was the first keeper in action to deny the visitors, normal service as resumed shorlty afterwards when Salmon was denied when one on one and Farrelly seeing his follow up effort blocked by the diving vistors defence.
Just after the hour, Salmon (pictured top) finally got the goal his play deserved, latching onto a Farrelly throughball to find the bottom corner with a neat angled drive. As Town introduced their four subs off the bench, the play becames lightly more disjointed, but substitute Lee Thompson, on his second debut for the club, forced the visiting keeper to save well before Tom Rutter saw his speculative long range effort rebound to safety off the crossbar.

Town: Connett (Clayton), Grogan, Ness, Hardwick, Tomlinson, Finley, Corrigan, Farrelly (Bond), Salmon (Thompson), Bathurst (Anderson), Rutter.

Atten: 111
