McCarthy sees red as Town draw

WARRINGTON Town brought the curtain down on their travels with a 1-1 draw at lowly Ossett as striker Jimmy McCarthy (pictured above) saw red for an off the ball incident.
Ossett defender Eddie Hague also walked as the home side held on for the point they required to avoid possible relegation.
Town were looking to continue their good run of form which has seen them take maximum points from the last three games.
Both sides started cautiously, with neither creating many chances, Levi Kennedy was the first to go close, seeing his looping effort go onto the roof of the net. Gavin Salmon had the opportunity to put Town ahead shortly afterwards, but blasted over when through on goal. Town took the lead in bizarre fashion on 17 minutes, when Chris Gahgan rolled the ball into the empty net, (pictured below) after Salmon collided with goalkeeper Ben Saynor, as the latter was kicking the ball out of his area. This disputed goal seemed to get the home side into the game, striker Shane Kelsey blasting over for the home side soon afterwards.
The home side did get their equaliser on 28 minutes, when midfielder Jason Bentley was on hand in the box to beat Connett. The home side had their best spell of pressure shortly afterwards, Connett denying Bentley with his legs and Sam Finley twice clearing the ball off the line, as the home side pressed with winger Nathan James blasting over when well placed. The last chance of the half fell to McCarthy, but the Town striker, saw his effort well saved by Saynor.
The second half began with the major flashpoint of the game, after a niggly spell, referee Mr Lawson showed straight red cards to McCarthy and Ossett defender Eddie Hague, who clashed off the ball. It was the home side who continued to create most of the opportunities, twice Kelsey could have scored, but was denied by a combination of woeful finishing and good goalkeeping by Connett. Town got back into the game, after re-arranging the team following the dismissal of McCarthy and Salmon was denied by Saynor when he was about to shoot on goal, and the same player could only find the side netting when well placed shortly afterwards.
The game had really opened up, with both sides looking for a winning goal, Town were indebted to captain Tom Hardwick for clearing what looked like a dangerous situation and midfielder Mike Grogan shot narrowly wide as the game petered out into a draw.
Warrington’s final game of the season is this Saturday against second placed Lancaster, kick off 3pm, with the team keen to finish on a high to cement a top 10 finish.
