Wolves go top!

WARRINGTON Wolves went top of Super League with a hard fought 16-28 victory at Castleford Tigers.
The Wolves showed plenty of character after going behind 10-0 early on and while new kid on the block Richie Myler received praise from his boss Tony Smith, it was old timer Lee Briers (pictured above) who worked his magic to ensure Warrington came out on top.
After scoring 11 tries against Harlequins last week Warrington found the going tougher at The Jungle but two mistakes allowed them to recover from 14-10 down.
Stand-off Briers turned the tide with an interception try, before new signing Myler seized on a loose ball to touch down and later added another.
Warrington had trailed 10-0 in the wet and wintery conditions after early Cas tries from James Evans and Joe Westerman, but levelled at the break following a Simon Grix score and Chris Riley’s sixth of the season.
A second Evans try gave Cas hope of following up their famous first round win at Leeds but Warrington finished strongly as Briers intercepted a Chase pass to level again. A Westerman penalty inched the Tigers two points ahead but again Cas were unable to cling on and a mistake proved their undoing as Hudson lost the ball and Myler gathered to race in and score.
Chris Bridge kicked only the third conversion of the night to put Warrington 20-16 in front.
Castleford thought they had equalised again through Hudson but the video referee ruled a knock on.
A Bridge penalty gave Warrington more breathing space and victory was assured when Briers kept play alive after a drop goal attempt went wrong and set up Myler for a late converted try.
Commenting on Myler’s two try performance Smith said: “He is a good boy who will score plenty of tries this year. He is an opportunist, but a bit more than that, and he is fitting in well with our boys.
“He is starting to understand all our players a bit better. He is still finding his feet but
coming along nicely.”
Commenting on the team performance Smith added: “We got our act together in the second half, we were pretty disappointed with our first half.
“We gave away four penalties in the first seven minutes of the game.
“That lets the opposition out of their half and takes a bit of out of your tank of petrol.
“We were pretty ordinary with the ball because of that but we grafted our way back in there and in the second half we were a lot better.”
