The Challenge Cup takes pride of place in the boardroom with (L-R) Chief Executive Gary Skentelbery, Wolves’ stars Chris Riley and Paul Wood, the Mayor and Mayoress Coun Brian and Irina Axcell, director Richy Sutton and matchball sponsor Ryan Modlin from Co-op Funeral services.

WARRINGTON Town ensured they stayed in the play-off hunt with a convincing 2-0 victory over Chorley at Cantilever Park as they were cheered on by two special guests.
Warrington Wolves’ stars Chris Riley and Paul Wood, who brought a long the Challenge Cup, came along to show their support as Town were looking to get back to their previous winning ways, having slipped up last weekend at Lancasterand welcomed back regular shot stopper Richie Mottram into the starting line up.
The visitors started brightly seeing two early efforts from distance go off target. Town were soon into the game and livewire striker Jimmy McCarthy was the first to go close seeing his shot on the turn going narrowly over the bar.
Warrington came close to scoring once again when Hadland saw his dipping effort go narrowly over the bar. Town had took control of the game and striker Tony Evans saw his attempted header smuggled behind for a corner, from the resultant corner, captain Mike Tomlinson saw his angled drive through the packed penalty area, well saved by Chorley keeper Zac Hibbert.
Mike Grogan (pictured above right) was next to go close, seeing his header go narrowly over the bar. Town, despite dominating for most of the half, went closest to scoring through Grogan just a minute before half time, getting on the end of a throughball and seeing his effort well saved by Hibbert at his near post.
The visitors forced the first chance of the second half forcing Mottram into an excellent save but once again Town began to control the game, with Evans forcing a fine save from Hibbert.
Town took a deserved lead in the 68th minute when prolific wing man Chris Gahgan (pictured left) scored with a fantastic scorpion like kick to record his 18th goal of the season for the Yellows.
Chorley almost equalised soon after, but were indebted to Mottram who produced a fantastic save to deny visiting striker Christopher Mason when through on goal.
The game was ended as a contest in the 73rd minute when Warrington born defender Darren Kinsey was on hand to slam the ball home from 10 yards after a scramble involving many players in the Chorley box.
Kinsey almost grabbed a rare personal brace soon after when his fine curling free kick was saved at full length by the diving Hibbert. The last chance for a third fell to Evans who curled his effort narrowly wide. The home side picked up a morale boosting three points before their re-arranged trip to league leaders Colwyn Bay tomorrow night, Tuesday, subject to the pitch not being waterlogged.

  1. Great win despite the poor conditions, hopefully Town can take this into Tuesday nights game and keep up the good form in the League.

Great to see the Wolves being involved and hope this may well be the start to attracting a few more Rugby Players and fans to watch Town

  2. Fantastic gesture by the Wolves to send down the Challenge Cup and for Paul Wood and Chris Riley to give up their free time to come down and cheer on Warrington Town.

Hopefully they have set an example for others to follow!
