Town march on in Trophy

WARRINGTON Town produced a five star show as they dumped Sheffield out of the FA Trophy 5-2 at Cantilever Park.
A hat-trick from Town’s man of the match and leading scorer Chris Gaghan (pictured) helped set up the win which means Warrington now face a tricky trip to Whitby Town from the Unibond Premier, in two weeks time.
The victory helped ease the pain of bowing out of the F.A Cup last Tuesday at Radcliffe.
With the wind behind them Town were in front after just 10 minutes when Jimmy McCarthy’s strike from 12 yards was deflected into the net.
Town were in total control and eventually got their second on 38 minutes when Gaghan slotted home a penalty after a handball in the box.
Three minutes later Mike Grogan rose at a corner to head home to make it 3-0 at the break, with Warrington well on top.
With the wind against them in the second half Town found it difficult to get out of their own half but went 4-0 up after Gaghan slotted home a second penalty after another handball in the box.
With an eye on Tuesday’s tough trip to league leaders Colwyn Bay on Tuesday evening manager Joey Dunn rang the changes from the bench and as a result Town lost their momentum.
The wind played havoc in the Town defence allowing Sheffield’s Greg Wright to head home and two minutes later the visitors had a second after being awarded a penalty.
Keeper Richie Mottram saved Curt Jackson’s penalty but Wright followed up to slot the ball home as the Warrington defence stood static much to the frustration of Mottram.
At 4-2 and with five minutes added time Sheffield almost added a third but Gaghan completed his hat-trick in the 90th minute tapping in from short range to settle the Warrington nerves.
Pictures show Chris Gaghan slotting home a penalty and celebrating his hat-trick.
