Artist step nearer dream

WARRINGTON artist Anthony Turk hopes he is a step nearer achieving his dream after creating an eye-catching marine life mural at a local swimming pool.
Anthony, from Great Sankey, has always dreamed of creating a giant marine life mural on a Warrington landmark.
Now after creating one at Sankey Leisure’s swimming pool, he hopes he is a step nearer his dream.
It was while visiting family in Detroit (USA) in 1995 that he started his dream.
His cousin’s husband – Jerry Sell – showed him a book by his nephew – Robert Wyland.
Wyland’s canvases were huge buildings set in industrial and coastal areas. While in the States Anthony got the chance to work on one of Wyland’s giant marine life murals.
“Although I had seen murals before, his style was unique – he uses car spray guns which is a large airbrush and
traditional brushes. A typical Wyland mural of blues and greens transform the buildings and as the murals are marine scenes, the environmental message is striking. I couldn’t wait to return home to begin work.”
Unfortunately he was not able to pursue his dream due to planning red tape in Warrington, resulting in the creation of the Pink Eye building at Crosfield’s roundabout.
Meanwhile Wyland flourished becoming the official artist of the Beijing Olympics.
In contrast Anthony has had limited opportunities to use the techniques he had learned from Wyland and was delighted to have the chance to use them at Sankey Leisure Centre.
Meanwhile he still has a dream of one day removing the giant tear from the Pink Eye building near the Crosfield roundabout and replacing it with a marine life mural.
