AN AFGHANISTAN war veteran from Chapelford has issued a rallying cry asking people to participate in this year’s “A Walk in the Park” on Sunday May 10.
Tom Coleridge, 23, is an ambassador and Disability Information Officer for Warrington Disability Partnership, who are organising the event to take place at Sankey Valley Park.
tom-coleridgeHe will complete the three-mile circuit that begins and ends at WDP’s headquarters – the Centre for Independent Living on Beaufort Street – and takes in the scenic Sankey Canal.
“I’ve set myself the challenge to complete two laps, which is 10k in total,” says Tom, who took part last year. “I’ll be using a wheelchair with a handbike attachment to do it – and that’s the great thing about this particular challenge.
“You can walk the course; push the course; even jog or run it if you want to. You set your own pace and distance. The most important thing is to enjoy a brilliant day out and to raise funds for the cause you believe in.”
Participants pay a £5 registration fee per person to WDP and can then choose their own charity to fundraise for through sponsorship. Alternatively, they can pay the registration fee and simply take part for the enjoyment and exercise.
“Everyone gets a medal and a certificate,” says Dave Thompson MBE DL, Chief Executive and Founder of the user-led social enterprise.
“They will also be entered into a draw to win some terrific prizes, which have been donated by our supporters. A variety of stalls will be serving refreshments on the day – as well as activities and games for all ages. We look forward to welcoming lots of people to what should be a fun event for all.”
All monies raised for WDP will be used to support Disability Awareness Day 2015, and to promote independent living for disabled people.
