“Village abandoned by Labour”

LABOUR have been accused of “abandoning” the village of Appleton in the forthcoming Local Elections.
Local Lib Dems claim it illustrates the contempt that Labour have for people living in the south of the borough.
Cllr Ian Marks, (pictured right) leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the borough council, said: “We were surprised to see that Labour will not contest the Appleton Borough Council seat in the coming elections, particularly as local elections on a General Election day have a high turnout.
“This is surprising, as at the last meeting of the council the Labour leader accused the Liberal Democrats of not wanting all-out elections because they couldn’t field enough candidates.
“Now Labour have abandoned an important ward in the south of the borough while Liberal Democrats are fighting every ward.
“This shows the contempt that Labour have for those living in the south of Warrington.”
Cllr Bob Barr, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South commented\; “Why should voters support Labour in either election on May 7 when they can’t even put up a candidate in this important ward?
“This shows Labour’s disdain for the area. Only the Liberal Democrats, who hold all three council seats in Appleton, work for the local population all year round and ensure that Appleton’s voice is heard in Warrington.
“The voters may decide that a Liberal Democrat would serve Warrington South better in Parliament too.”
Meanwhile Kevin Bennett, the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South also hit out describing
his Labour opponent in the General Election, Nick Bent as “a laughing stock.”
Kevin, (pictured left) who himself lives in Appleton, said: “For the first time in anyone’s memory, the Labour Party have failed to contest all the seats on Warrington Borough Council at the May elections.
“What makes this even stranger is that Nick Bent has been sending regular emails to his Party faithful to reinforce Ed Miliband’s message that they are a ‘One Nation’ party. He has claimed that they are fighting just as hard in Appleton as anywhere else. Apparently ‘One Nation’ politics doesn’t apply to the WA4 postcode.”
Jane Whalen, Chair of Warrington South CLP said:”The Labour Party is committed to representing and serving every part of Warrington, including Appleton, where we always have candidates. We had a candidate for the upcoming borough election in Appleton, we were campaigning in the Ward and all his nomination were signed and ready to be presented at the town hall. Unfortunately the nomination papers were not submitted in time, which is a real shame.
“We are sorry that on this occasion Appleton voters will not have the option of a Labour candidate for the local elections but we urge Appleton people to support Labour’s Nick Bent in the parliamentary election.”
