Help wanted for photographic “time capsule”

OVER a period of eight weeks, a Warrington man scanned hundreds of negatives of photographs his father had taken in the Fifties and Sixties of local railway scenes and at Laporte Chemicals, where he was the works on-the-spot photographer.
Keith Smith – himself a former Laporte employee – has uploaded hundreds of the pictures onto the photo sharing websites Flickr and YouTube as he considers them a vital record of important parts of Warrington’s history – a time capsule of the local chemical industry.
But he feels preserving the photographs is only half the job and is searching for information such as names and locations.
The railway pictures are not a problem but some of the Laporte pictures are.
Mr Smith said: “Names are the biggest problem, followed by locations. It’s been over 60 years since I myself worked there and I’ve forgotten all but a few names.
“I need help from former employees and their families – especially children who appear in some of the pictures.”
A picture of a Laporte cricket team is an example where Mr Smith needs help.
“It would have been taken in Warrington and contains many Laporte faces – but where and who?” he said.
“But it is not just one photo – it’s more than 100 with more still to follow.
“I’m committed to this important time capsule. I’m its last chance.”
Mr Smith’s pictures can be found on Flickr and YouTube by searching the internet for “Laporte Chemicals Warrington”.
