PUPILS at Warrington’s Fox Wood Special School and Greenbank School, have kick-started the development of a new growing area by planting a mini orchard.
Teachers and The Mersey Forest team joined the youngsters as they planted 14 apple and pear trees, which will be used to host outdoor lessons.
The project is being coordinated The Mersey Forest (www.merseyforest.org.uk) as part of the Big Tree Plant.
Acting head teacher Val Howorth said: “Learning outdoors is an important part of our curriculum. The sessions help to improve student’s confidence, interpersonal skills and knowledge of the natural world.
“ Our new trees will enhance our growing area – we are looking forward to our first harvest of fruit!”
Deputy Mayor of Warrington and Mersey Forest board member Cllr Geoff Settle said: “It was great to see the students getting involved with the planting day – they really enjoyed it and the new trees are a great addition to the growing area.”
