VILLAGERS have been left shocked and outraged at the unsympathetic repairs being carried out on an historic bridge over the Bridgewater Canal at Walton, Warrington.
The Grade II listed building, which crosses the Bridgewater Canal near the Walton Arms pub, was badly damaged after being struck by an lorry carrying a supply of bricks last month.
But contractors working for the bridge owners Peel, have been using modern bricks to repair the damage, completely out of character with the existing brick work.
The original bricks which had been knocked over have also disappeared from the site.
Local councillor Paul Kennedy said: “If the new brick work was being done on a modern bridge it would be lovely – but it is completely out of character with the existing brickwork and looks a complete mess.
“I think it is fair to say these repairs are not acceptable – I would also like to know where the missing bricks have gone – they should have been used as part of the repair work.”
Cllr Kennedy added that Warrington Borough Council had already set up an enforcement file in the event that Peel fail to carry out sympathetic and appropriate repairs.
Meanwhile local residents have called for a traffic plan for the area to avoid further incidents.
