INSPIRATIONAL Margaret Isherwood dropped into the hairdressing salon at Warrington Collegiate for a shampoo and set – together with her MBE.
Mrs Isherwood, from Fairfield, brought photos of herself talking to the Prince of Wales as he awarded her MBE which she received for services to adult learning.
The 96-year-old, who attends the salon every week, is still working, running the elder social group at St Margaret’s Church as well as volunteering for 20 years with Age Concern.
She said: “It’s such a delight to come and enjoy a bit of pampering. I often tell the students about when I trained at the college in both IT and Beauty Therapy.
“Prince William asked me if I enjoyed my work, and if it was tiring. I said I loved it and never got tired as it’s so relaxing. Later, when he was getting up to leave, he gave me a lovely wink. At 96, I was thrilled to be getting the attention of such a charming young man. I think it was better than getting the medal.
“I’m very proud to receive the MBE. I don’t know who nominated me but I would like to say thank you very much to them.”
Hairdressing student, 19 year old Emily Scully, from Westbrook, who styled Margaret’s hair, said: “It was absolutely fascinating to hear about Margaret receiving her MBE from Prince William at Buckingham Palace. She told me it was very nice meeting Prince William and that he looks like his father, Prince Charles.”
