Young mechanics with a dream

ASPIRING mechanics may see their dreams come true after building their own go kart thanks to a new community venture in Warrington.
The four-week scheme, run by the borough council, Golden Gates Housing Trust and Warrington Collegiate, gives young people not in education, training or employment (NEETS) the skills and experience to explore motor mechanics as a future career.
The group, who built and will get to ride their go kart at a well-known race track, were also given specialist support with CVs, job hunting and interview skills by the council’s careers for young people team.
Cllr Jean Carter, the council’s lead member for children and young people said: “This project is a great example of how we are encouraging young people in Warrington to develop valuable skills and experience to boost their confidence. The young people involved have been inspired by what they have achieved, which is an incredible success for everyone involved.
“Not only is this is a perfect example of partnership working in Warrington, it’s also a potentially life changing opportunity for young people. We will be evaluating the success of the project and hope to roll it out in other areas of the borough.”
The group meet at St Margaret’s Community Hub on a Wednesday.
Anyone interested in joining a future group or who could support the group in other ways should contact Becky Keeling, education and employment officer, careers for young people, 01925 424900 or email [email protected]
