Three’s the magic number for Warrington Town

Warrington Town 3-0 Kendal, by James Gordon

THREE fine goals earned Warrington Town three more points towards their push for the play-offs with victory over Kendal.
Robbie Booth, Stephen Tames and Nathan Burke were all on the scoresheet as Shaun Reid’s side moved up to ninth place in the table.
At the other end, James McCarten and Tom Hardwick dealt well with the threat of Kendal forward Jordan Connerton, the third top scorer in the league with 24 goals this season, as the visitors threat fizzled out in the final quarter.stephen-tames-celebrates
It was Connerton who had the first sniff of an opening on 17 minutes, peeling off the shoulder of a defender to find space in the box, but his awkward shot was comfortably stopped by Karl Wills, named in the Town goal despite picking up a niggle in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over Clitheroe.
Town eventually got a foothold in the game midway through the first half, earning a corner from which McCarten headed over the bar.
Some neat link-up play in midfield earned Town some field position, Tames laying off for Robbie Booth, who perhaps should have done better given the time he had, firing a shot well over.
He made no mistake minutes later though, when the same pair linked up to give Town the lead. Tames showed strength and pace to get free down the right with some great wing play, getting goal side of the defender and then pulling back for Booth, (pictured right) the midfielder picking his spot and side-footing the ball past the goalkeeper for 1-0.robbie-booth-celebrates
That gave the hosts a cushion they never really looked like relinquishing. Kendal mustered two half chances before half time, Connerton curling a free kick well wide before seeing a shot well blocked by McCarten in front of goal.
Their biggest chance came shortly before the hour, Wills making a big save with his feet to deny Connerton after the ball fell to him from a deflected shot.
That proved to be a warning that Town would learn from, and they started to push for a second goal. David Mannix drilled a left footed shot through a ruck of bodies and wide, before Hardwick somehow diverted a Louis Corrigan cross over the bar from close range.
The crucial second goal eventually came on 79 minutes, man of the match Tames fighting hard to win a loose ball, showing strength to get behind a defender, and then finished well from a tight angle.
That eased any tension, and the introduction of Gerard Kinsella prompted a third goal – the former Everton academy man lofting a fine through ball for Burke (pictured left), who added to his two goals on Tuesday night with a lovely taken goal, lofting the ball first time over the onrushing goalkeeper from outside the box.
The win moves Town within seven points of the play-off places, ahead of a home game with New Mills on Tuesday night and a crucial trip to Spennymoor next Saturday.
